...It is not advisable to show kindness to a person
who is a tyrant, a traitor or a thief because kindness
encourages him to become worse and does not
awaken him. The more kindness you show to a liar
the more he is apt to lie, for he thinks that you know
not, while you do know, but extreme kindness keeps
you from revealing your knowledge.

Riches
ALTHOUGH the Realm of Glory hath none of the vanities of the world, yet within the treasury of trust and resignation We have bequeathed to Our heirs an excellent and priceless Heritage. Earthly treasures We have not bequeathed, nor have We added such cares as they entail. By God! In earthly riches fear is hidden and peril is concealed. Consider ye and call to mind that which the All-Merciful hath revealed in the Qur’án: ‘Woe betide every slanderer and defamer, him that layeth up riches and counteth them.’ 1 Fleeting are the riches of the world; all that perisheth and changeth is not, and hath never been, worthy of attention, except to a recognized measure.

"O My Servant! Obey Me and I shall make thee like unto Myself."
The first is His statement: "O My Servant! Obey Me and I shall make thee like unto Myself. I say 'Be,' and it is, and thou shalt say 'Be,' and it shall be."

Sufferings
"All these sufferings are caused by man himself, it is quite clear therefore that certain sorrows are the result of our own deeds. Other sufferings there are, which come upon the Faithful of God. Consider the great sorrows endured by Christ and by His apostles! Those who suffer most, attain to the greatest perfection."

Wisdom
Beyond the acquisition of knowledge, however, wisdom is needed.
Bahá’u’lláh describes wisdom as “the greatest gift,” as humanity’s “unfail-
ing protector,” and as the “foremost teacher in the school of existence.”

...with pure motives, and only for the sake of God ...arise...serve
Is there any greater blessing conceivable for a man, than that he
should become the cause of the education, the development, the
prosperity and honor of his fellow-creatures? No, by the Lord God!
The highest righteousness of all is for blessed souls to take hold of
the hands of the helpless and deliver them out of their ignorance
and abasement and poverty, and with pure motives, and only for
the sake of God, to arise and energetically devote themselves to the
service of the masses, forgetting their own worldly advantage and
working only to serve the general good.

“our past is not the thing that matters so much in this world as what we intend to do with our future”
Acquiring humility calls for the rejection of both guilt—the paralyzing, harsh judgment of the failure to live up to the standard—and complacency—the reinterpretation of the standard, lowering it to suit personal comfort and preferences. The Guardian’s words that 'our past is not the thing that matters so much in this world as what we intend to do with our future' help us to overcome feelings of guilt. And we can avoid complacency by always acknowledging the truth of the divine standard raised by Bahá’u’lláh, upholding it under all circumstances, and refusing to compromise it with the commonly accepted standards of our time."

"Honor lies ...in one's efforts to promote the welfare of humanity"
Honor lies not in ephemeral positions of power, but in one’s efforts to promote the welfare of humanity.
(Bahá'u'lláh, in Tablets 64)
Happy the soul that shall forget his own good, and like the chosen ones
of God, vie with his fellows in service to the good of all. . . .
(Abdu’l-Bahá, The Secret of Divine Civilization 116)
Through the divine teachings, the urge to indulge the self throughdominance over others is subdued by spiritual competition to serve the
well-being of all. It is only in the acquisition of divine virtues and in
service to God and His Cause that individuals vie with one another.

"...to sing in harmony to the Supreme Concourse..."
Ya Baha'u'l-Abhá!
by Abdu’l-Bahá
In that cry, are all the cries of the universe sounded, and the chord of the divine reality struck. The shout of “Ya Baha’u’l-Abha!” in this day of its birth is more profit unto thee than all knowledge of the sciences and all the wealth of the earth. It is the rhythm of progress, the chord of creation, the melody of eternity, and the password to the Kingdom of God. Therefore, use it to establish thyself in the realm of Divine Trust. Speak it in thy solitude, cry it in thy joy, murmur it in thy grief, and chant it in thy weakest moments, and it shall give thee strength. It is the cry that brings the Supreme Concourse to the door of thy life, and stations the Love of Abha above thy soul of trust. It opens the heavens of mysteries, colours the riddles of life. It absorbs all, encircles all, includes all. The words of that phrase, “O Glory of God” is to sing in harmony to the Supreme Concourse of songs, and harmonize thyself with the holy I AM in His Court of Divine Omnipotent Truth. It holds all there is of substance, and all there is of form, and all there is of Spirit, and all there is in the world of creative thought. The Greatest Name carries the highest vibrations; the vibrations produce a spiritual word; the vibration of the utterance, either mental or orally, produces a spiritual result, regardless of the thought.

The individual, Shoghi Effendi urges, must “struggle against the natural inertia that weighs him down in his effort to arise, shed, heroically and irrevocably, the trivial and superfluous attachments which hold him back, [and] empty himself of every thought that may tend to obstruct his path.”

"The infant who takes a first step and falls, has not failed"
"...be free from polemics and rancor, from sumary judgments of success or failure, from fear of mistakes. We must appreciate the dynamics of evolution and maturation. The infant who takes a first step and falls, has not failed. While learning to avoid judgmental attitudes, however, we need to recognize that such attitudes exist, and, therefore, exercise wisdom in our endeavors to lift the community to new levels of consciousness. “An enlightened man of wisdom should primarily speak with words as mild as milk,” Bahá’u’lláh states, “that the children of men may be nurtured and edified thereby and may attain the ultimate goal of human existence which is the station of true understanding and nobility.”

...build unity...
...as Bahá'ís we know that unity is important. At one level, we can simply value unity and learn to work in an environment where unity already exists. But is this adequate? At a higher level of consciousness we learn to build unity and to transform situations of discord and conflict into those of harmony and loving fellowship. We are also aware that justice is imperative. But is it enough to only deal fairly with others? At a higher level of consciousness we are to become champions of justice and help create a just social order. Questions such as these abound. Do our communities act merely as a spiritual refuge for a handful of believers, or are they set out on a mission to spiritualize the planet? Are the institutions nothing more than stewards of a small religious community, or are they the channels of God’s grace for the entire region they serve?
(Paul Lample, Creating a New Mind, p. 5)

...forms of belief and ancestral imitation must pass away and be reformed
Human reality is bounded by the limits set in the mind. When the Manifestation of God appears, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá explains, “human intellects themselves must change.” The “antiquated forms of belief and ancestral imitations which are at variance with the foundations of divine reality” must “pass away and be reformed.”
(‘Abdu’l-Bahá, The Promulgation of Universal Peace 144; quoted in Creating a New Mind, P. Lample, p. 4)
